I’d like to talk about English mistakes I made in my old days.
・Do you have time? (Can you spare some time for me?)
・Do you have the time? (What time is it?)
On my first day as an English teacher, I got a lot of questions about English from students, but I couldn’t answer some of them. I asked them to give me a week to find the answers. At the end of the day, I was going to ask one of the native teachers the questions and said “do you have the time?” I wanted to ask her to spare some time for me but she suddenly started looking around for a clock. I was surprised and didn’t know what was happening. Then I said “I have a few questions from my students.” She realized what I wanted to ask her.
・hamburg (a city’s name in Germany)
・hamburger (cooked ground meat)
One day, I was going to take my colleagues to a popular hamburger restaurant, “Bikkuri donki”. I said to them, “do you eat hamburg?” They looked like they didn’t know what I meant. However, one of them who had lived in Japan for a long time and knew Japanese people call hamburger a Hambagu” explained it. After all we enjoyed hamburgers there.
・congratulation
・congratulations
I was always confused with these two. A man from Ireland taught me that “congratulations” is used like “regards” and “greetings”. Then I have never made this mistake ever since. I’m writing this essay, recalling my past. I’m glad to know a lot of people from around the world who have helped me improve my English skills. I’d like to thank all of them.
